Should we hate the devil?

Keep Your Attention on God

Hate is a strong term that goes beyond simply disliking or disagreeing with someone. Hate means to will evil for another person which is contrary to the law of love as presented by Jesus in the Gospels. God does not desire that any soul perish and we should not have such a desire either (2 Peter 3:9).

However, we should hate evil and wicked actions as St. Paul instructed when he taught, “Hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good” (Romans 12:9).

While we should resist every influence of evil, we should be careful not to become distracted by them. We become vulnerable when we take our attention away from God. In many ways, Satan would like for us to hate him because that would mean focusing our attention on him. Such an action is spiritually dangerous and should be avoided.

Hate also corrupts the one who hates.
