Holy Week Is Time to Celebrate with Your Parish!

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, the day Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. On this day, we celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into the city. It is a time to remember the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is a time for great joy and celebration. It is a time to remember the love that Jesus showed for us and to renew our hope in his resurrection. The Paschal Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday.

Gospel Reflections

Today we reflect on the Beatitudes that Jesus gave us, and how we can implement them into our lives.

National Marriage Week: February 7-14, 2023

From the USCCB:

“The observances of National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) and World Marriage Day (Sunday, Feb. 12) are an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. This year’s theme, “Marriage…one flesh, given and received” highlights the one-flesh union of husband and wife that is willed by God. It also indicates the personal self-gift of each spouse, one to the other. These concepts point to Christ who gives Himself under the appearance of bread and wine—as real flesh and blood.”

World Marriage Day: February 12, 2023

Each year WWME honors and salutes the beauty of every couple and priest’s faithfulness, commitment to love and sacrifice in the joy of daily married life, and the priesthood.

World Marriage Day Prayer:

Father, as we prepare for World Marriage Day, we thank you for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Help us to witness to its glory by a life of growing intimacy. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more One in Heart, Mind, and Body. Strengthen our dialogue and help us become living signs of your love. Make us grow more in love with the Church so we may renew the Body of Christ. Make us a sign of unity in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Brother. Amen. ~ Fr. Bill Dilgen, S.M.M.

A Prayer for Vocations

Lord Jesus, we ask You with confidence for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Your Church.

Aided by the intercession of Immaculate Mary, let there be a rich harvest of vocations. Let men be enlightened and strengthened to follow Your call to serve as priests and brothers.

Let seminaries overflow, and bless their formations and teachers with a wisdom not of this world.

Let Your daughters feel an irresistible pull to a life of contemplation and service as sisters and nuns.

Let there be a new flowering of religious orders which seek the path of holiness.

Let men and women You call to marriage see the importance of this vocation, and like Tobias, seek their spouses for a noble purpose.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2023 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Week of January 8, 2023 – Feast of the Motherhood of Mary and Solemnity of the Epiphany

Gospel Reflections-
Motherhood of Mary and Solemnity of the Epiphany

Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Motherhood of Mary mass (Luke 2:16-21).

The wise men upon hearing about the birth of Jesus decided not just to acknowledge it, but to actively seek it out to see it themselves. In the same way, we are called to actively seek out Jesus’ works in action, not simply acknowledge it.

Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Solemnity of the Epiphany mass (Matthew 2:1-12).

Today we reflect on the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus, and the meanings each of those gifts held.

Third Week of Advent

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Third Sunday of Advent (Matthew 11:2-11).

Today we are called to recognize that Jesus does not make a decision of faith for us. Instead, we must go out of our way to choose him out of our own free will. We need to look at the signs of the times in the world around us and make an individual decision of faith in Jesus.

Reflections on Advent, Marina Hedwall, Faith Formation Ministry- Reverse Advent Calendar

The Advent Season is all about reflecting on how we can prepare our hearts and homes on the message of hope that Christ’s birth brings. In today’s busy world it is even more crucial that we make time to pause this year and help those around us to be present to its true meaning. Advent is a time for faith, communities and families to remember, through prayer, reflections, special rituals, and good deeds about the meaning of the special gift God bestowed on us.

So, what can we do this Advent to be mindful of why we celebrate Christmas?

There are of course the traditional ways with Advent wreaths, setting up the Nativity Scene in your home, celebrating feast days and saints and of course participating in local charity events. However, I’d like to share a few ideas that may help you think outside of the “gift” box this year and begin some new Advent traditions that will shine light on this beautiful season!

An Advent Tree– Many of us can’t wait to set up your Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving, then take it down on New Year’s Day. This year, consider waiting to fully decorate your tree until Christmas Eve. Instead, let your bare tree be an “Advent Tree,” a symbol of our waiting for the coming of Christ. Your tree does not need to stay bare for the four weeks. You may consider adding a strand of lights each week or adding few ornaments a week while reflecting on the four weeks of Advent; hope, peace, joy, and love. You may also want to incorporate a gift-chain. Then on Christmas eve, add all remaining decorations and celebrate through the Epiphany.

A Gift Chain-
During Advent focus on doing acts of charity and kindness for other. Create a “gift-chain” by adding pre-cut strips of colored paper to a chain daily. Write or draw what special gift you offered up on the strip of paper before adding it to the chain. Some ideas… call a person who is alone, visit an elderly or ill person, send a card to someone, or donate hand-made cards to a local charity, bake some cookies or make a batch of soup for a neighbor, your parish priest, or first responder. Say a rosary or

spend time in adoration offering it up for a special intention. You can use different colors to represent different types of charity and kind acts.

Lastly, consider a reverse Advent Calendar.
Instead of opening a window to take something each day, this Advent encourage giving. On a calendar write a Scripture verse and a common item needed by a local charity or individual, one item for each day of Advent. Decorate a box or bag to collect the items. Each day read and reflect on the Scripture verse, pray for those who have such basic needs, and put the item indicated on the calendar in the box or bag. Immediately after Christmas, gather the collected items and donate.

As you consider how you and your family will spend Advent, be patient as Mary was and prepare your heart for Jesus!

Download the Advent Reverse Calendar for you and your family!

Eucharistic Revival and Synod Resources

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to participate in various initiatives to deepen our relationship and understanding with Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist. Below find resources you can access to learn more and participate.

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Thirty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 19:1-10).

Today we are told the story of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector. Instead of acting as an obstacle to others wanting to encounter the Lord, we are called to facilitate that encounter.

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Twenty-eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 17:11-19).

Today we reflect on the reading of Jesus healing ten men with leprosy. We are shown how Luke choses not to call these men “lepors” but instead “men with leprosy”, showing us that we are not to be categorized by our circumstances.

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to on the Gospel from the Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 17:5-10).

The reading today invokes us to prioritize having more of the right kind of faith instead of just having more faith. Having the wrong kind of faith does us no good. Only when we have the right kind of faith will we be able to move mountains.

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Twenty-sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 16:19-21).

Mother Theresa, No Greater Love- October 3rd and 4th

Twenty-five years have passed since the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta , sparking a renewed interest in this spiritual giant of the 20th century. Filmed on 5 continents and featuring unprecedented access to both institutional archives and the apostolates of the Missionaries of Charity, this film reveals not just who Mother Teresa was, but how her singular vision to serve Christ in the poor continues to be realized through the Missionaries of Charity today. This is far more than a documentary. It is at once a soaring tribute to a spiritual icon, a powerful witness of authentic Christian charity, and a guidepost for all who seek hope in our turbulent times.

Week of September 11, 2022  – Unconditional Love

We apologize for the break of HDCN in August and early September. Our Assistant Director of Communications, Jennifer Peflini (Houdek) and her family tragically faced the passing of her younger sister Bridget, while on a summer vacation break in Ohio. We ask for the community’s prayers for the both the Houdek and Pelfini family as they all continue to lament the loss.

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Twenty Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 15:11-22),

Today we are called to recognize that we do not need to earn Jesus’ love, because he loves us unconditionally. We should use this knowledge to change our lives because of Jesus’ love for us.

Watch Here!

Catch up on previous weeks’ reflections:

  • Week of August 7th, Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time: Luke 12:35-40
  • Week of August 14th, Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time: Luke 12:49-53

Services For Father George Wolf September 18-19, 2022

Father George Wolf served many decades and touched the lives of many of the faithful in Nevada. He quietly passed away on September 8, 2022.  Although Father George’s desire was that the funeral mass be celebrated at his beloved Holy Cross Church, due to many concerns that it will not be a large enough venue, services have moved the mass to St. Rose of Lima as noted below.

Vigil: Sunday, September 18, at 6:30pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Sparks.

Funeral Mass: Monday, September 19, at 10:30am at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in south Reno. Reception to follow Mass.

All are welcome to attend.

Day of Reflection and Dedication, October 1, 2022

It feels like there is so much need in our world. How can we discern how we as individuals and a church community address the cries of the earth and the poor? How can our actions ripple into the world? Come and spend a day in reflection, prayer and learning, flowing from the spiritual and social teaching traditions of our faith.

Join us for A Day of Reflection and Dedication:  Responding to the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Presented by Father Chuck Duranbte, the Life, Peace & Justice Commission of the Diocese of Reno is sponsoring this day. Open to all.

Introductory to Centering Prayer Workshop October 22, 2022

Introductory Centering Prayer Workshop St. Galls Church, Saturday October 22nd 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Open Mind Open Heart, Fr. Thomas Keating O.C.S.O. Commissioned presenters with Contemplative Outreach Northern Nevada, would like to invite you to a Centering Prayer Workshop where we will teach a method of silent prayer rooted in our Christian contemplative heritage. Centering Prayer is a gentle silent method of consenting to Godʼs presence and healing action within us. By taking time to “rest in God” each day, we open our awareness to the gift of Godʼs presence.

Coffee and tea will be provided, please bring a food item to share. There will be four follow-up sessions on zoom on the evenings of Oct 27th, Nov 3rd, Nov 10th and Nov 17th. To assist in planning please register for the workshop with Cathy at sgtmom167@aol.com or call/text at (925) 586-3627.

Email Therese Coen and she can share her testimonial on her Centering Prayer experience: theresecoen@earthlink.net

Gospel Reflections

Bishop Mueggenborg invites us to reflect with him on the Gospel from the Twenty-fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Luke 16:1-9).

Today we are called to recognize that we are not responsible for our blessings. Everything that we have comes to us as a gift from God. When we realize that, we can be more grateful for all God has blessed us with.

World Wide Marriage Encounter Non-Residential Weekend November 12-13, 2022

A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend has something in it for every married couple.  What you get out of a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend will depend largely on where you are at in your relationship on the Weekend you go.  You will get whatever it is you need at that point in time.

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus talks about the rich soil.  The rich soil has many different nutrients in it.  The plant draws out the nutrients it needs at any given point in time. Worldwide Marriage Encounter can provide some of the rich soil your marriage needs to bear fruit “a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.”

Marriage Encounter will be held at St. Rose of Lima. This is NOT an overnight stay. The experience will take place at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, Saturday November 12th (early till late), and Sunday November 13th (early till mid-afternoon). Food is provided. Space is limited, so please register soon if you wish to attend!

Deacon Ordination Celebrations September 2022

BIshop Mueggenborg will ordain and celebrate our new ten Deacons supporting the Diocese of Reno having completed the five year Diaconate Formation Program.

The diaconate is a distinct permanent Order with a distinct academic/formation path.   A lifetime commitment to serving God’s People, a mission of service to  Liturgy, Word, and Charity.

A Deacon is a man who is called to a ministry of service. With priests and the Bishop, he receives the sacrament of Holy Orders. He is an ordained clergyman living in the lifestyle of the laity. Pope John Paul II said that, “the deacon is the Church’s service sacramentalized.”

There are two ordination dates for the diaconate ordination:

  • September 3: 1:00pm at St. Joseph’s in Elko
    • David Chavez
    • Joseph Plavi
    • Gustavo Mendez
  • September 10: 10:00am at St. Teresa of Avila in Carson City

    • Sergio Diaz
    • Joseph Haggarty
