If God is sovereign, why do anything?

God Desires Our Participation

The scriptures demonstrate the uniqueness of humanity by our ability to become willing participants in God’s work in the world. This is true in Genesis where Adam cooperates by naming the creatures and it’s true in the Gospel where Jesus reminds his disciples that they will bear much fruit only as they abide in him and are obedient to his word.

God’s sovereignty is manifested in giving us free will so that we might choose to respond to God and reflect God’s goodness and mercy in the world. In doing so we become active participants in the divine plan rather than passive spectators. That active participation draws us more deeply into love of the Creator and makes us willing subjects of God’s sovereignty over all creation.

There is no greater honor than to be God’s friend and servant. Our participation in the divine plan is an expression of relationship.
