How should we steer through gray areas of religion?

Guided By The Spirit

Areas of uncertainty can exist in the realms of both faith and morals. I’ll focus on the realm of faith.

We know that Jesus taught and did more than is contained in the Gospels (John 21:25). Jesus also told us that we will face issues and questions beyond what he addressed during his earthly ministry and that he would send the Holy Spirit to guide us (John 16:12-14). Although our knowledge of God is limited to the revealed truth we have received, that knowledge continues to develop and deepen under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Authentic development of doctrine can eventually clarify some areas of gray.

When faced with an area of gray in our faith, Catholics seek spiritual consistency with the revealed Word of God in Scripture and Tradition. We also observe how a particular response leads one into greater love of God and neighbor or diminishes it.
