How should religion be handled in the workplace?

With Integrity and Respect

A person of integrity will naturally desire that their faith and religious values permeate all areas of their life which include their professional endeavors. The first way in which this integration occurs is by conforming one’s character to the religious values held. Such values usually include justice, respect, compassion, mercy, honesty, humility, charity and so forth.

It is this authentic character witness which should first and foremost interest others. Religious symbols in the personal area of a workspace can be appropriate expressions of personal values and beliefs and should be regarded as any other personal item.

A respectful manifestation of someone’s belief in the workplace will not be imposed on another but can be proposed appropriately. It is important to remember that employees serve to advance the mission of the institution under the direction of its leaders and that employment may be justly contingent upon expressed support of that mission.
