Sister Virginia King (Sister Mary Austin)

Sister Virginia King, PBVM (formerly Sister Mary Austin) entered eternal life on December 27, 2022 at the Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco. Sister Virginia was born August 23, 1933 in Oakland. She attended the Presentation Sisters’ Saint Joseph School in Berkeley through 8th grade, graduating from Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa. In 1952 she entered the Sisters of the Presentation in Berkeley. Sister Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Austin King and brother A.L. Lindquist. She is survived by grand-niece Monica Swars, grand-nephew John Lindquist, cousin-in-law Katherine Kopp, and niece-in-law Ritsuko Lindquist, as well as dear friends the Hamilton family.

 

Sister Virginia held numerous degrees: a B.A. in Education from the University of San Francisco; a Masters in Math from Dominican College in San Rafael, partially funded by grants from the National Science Foundation; a minor in music while attending Saint Joseph College in Renesselaer, Indiana, and additional coursework at Santa Clara University, U.C.L.A., U.C. Berkeley, and San Francisco State University. Her primary ministry was education, teaching at Epiphany, Saint Agnes, and Saint Elizabeth elementary schools in San Francisco; Saint Joseph, Berkeley; St. Columba, Oakland; Our Lady of Fatima, Seattle; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Los Angeles. Subsequently she taught at Saint Joseph Presentation High School, Berkeley; Presentation High School, San Francisco and Bishop Manogue High School, Reno, Nevada. She also served in administrative roles for the Sisters and as the organist for the community liturgies.

 

A vigil will take place Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19. Both will be held at the Presentation Motherhouse, 2340 Turk Boulevard, San Francisco. Interment will follow the funeral at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. Vigil and Funeral attendance require full vaccination, negative Covid test within 24 hours, and K/N95 masking. The Mass will be livestreamed; link available at presentationsisterssf.org.

 

Memorial contributions to the Sisters of the Presentation are preferred. Contributions can be sent to Sisters of the Presentation, Mission Advancement Office, 281 Masonic Avenue, San Francisco CA 94118 in memory of Sister Virginia King.
